El 20 de septiembre, el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional anunció la extensión y redesignación de Venezuela para el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) basándose en “una mayor inestabilidad y falta de seguridad debido a las duraderas condiciones humanitarias, de seguridad, políticas y ambientales”.
Debido a que el TPS no solo fue extendido sino también redesignado, los venezolanos que hayan residido en los EE. UU. desde el 21 de julio de 2023 y cumplan con otros requisitos de elegibilidad podrán presentar solicitudes iniciales de TPS.
El DHS estima que, además de los 242.000 venezolanos actuales con TPS, otros 472.000 venezolanos podrían ser elegibles para solicitar el TPS debido a la redesignación.
Para ser elegible para TPS, un solicitante debe cumplir con todos los requisitos de elegibilidad y no puede haber sido condenado por ningún delito grave o dos o más delitos menores cometidos en los Estados Unidos.
