U.S. to Resettle Afrikaner Refugees from South Africa

Despite an overall tightening of refugee admissions, the current administration has approved the resettlement of 54 Afrikaner individuals from South Africa. The group, composed primarily of descendants of Dutch settlers, is expected to arrive in the United States shortly, with resettlement planned across several states including Alabama, Michigan, and New York.

President Trump described the Afrikaners as victims of “unjust racial discrimination” in South Africa, a sentiment echoed by some administration officials. Critics, including South Africa’s foreign ministry, have condemned the move as politically motivated, stating that it undermines the democratic values of their nation.

The resettlement has drawn both support and criticism, particularly because it contrasts sharply with the administration’s broader approach of limiting refugee admissions from other regions.
