Restauranteur Looking at Stiff Fines and Jail Time

The importance of business owners’ strict compliance with immigration laws in their hiring practices is driven home with the The New York Times report on the owner of a french restaurant in San Diego who was indicted for hiring 12 undocumented immigrants.  The owner of the restaurant now faces up to 30 years in prison and almost $4 million in fines.  The prosecution is part of a greater effort by the Federal Government to target those who employ immigrants who are not authorized to work.  The New York Times story indicates that that investigations of businesses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement were on pace to more than double in 2010 compared to 2009.  To read the full article, click here.
