TPS for Haiti to End in August 2025

On February 20, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it was reducing the previously announced Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation and extension for Haiti from 18 months to 12 months. Under this announcement, TPS for Haiti will now expire on August 3, 2025, instead of February 3, 2026. If DHS does not extend TPS beyond August 3, 2025, then the expiration of TPS for Haiti will become final.

This change will affect hundreds of thousands of Haitians living in the U.S. Back in June 2024, the former Secretary for DHS extended the designation of TPS for Haiti for additional 18 months, offering protection from deportation for nearly 200,000 Haitians living in the U.S. that qualified. In addition, the former Secretary re-designated TPS for Haiti, allowing over 300,000 Haitians living in the U.S. to apply for TPS for the first time. This recent announcement from DHS means that over 500,000 Haitians living in the U.S. will lose TPS protections when the TPS designation expires on August 3, 2025.

If DHS declines to extend TPS beyond the August 3, 2025, expiration date, it’s possible that individuals and/or groups could file federal lawsuits challenging the termination of TPS for Haitians. Two lawsuits were recently filed challenging the government’s recent announcement that it would terminate TPS protections for Venezuelans.
