Haitian Students Eligible for Work Authorization

As a result of the devastating economic impact of the earthquake in Haiti, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has loosened the requirements for Haitian students present in the United States on F-1 visas.

Specifically, ICE suspended certain regulatory requirements, allowing eligible Haitian students, present in the United States on F-1 visas, to obtain employment authorization, work an increased number of hours during the school term, and, possibly, reduce their school work load.  This relief applies only to sutdents who were lawfully present in the United States in F-1 status on Jan. 12, and enrolled in an institution that is certified by ICE’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program.
