Last week our client, a transgender woman from Mexico, was granted asylum by an immigration judge in Denver, CO. Our pro bono client suffered horrible abuse at the hands of her family members and peers as a child because of her perceived sexuality. She moved to the U.S. with her partner at the time who ended up being abusive and threatened to kill her if she told anyone she was transgender. Unfortunately, she had no idea she qualified for asylum and didn’t file her application until 10 years after she came to the U.S. But during her merits hearing the immigration judge held that she qualified for an exception to the 1-year filing deadline and she was granted asylum. Great work Courtney Sommer, Associate attorney.
