Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) has recently set up a centralized employment compliance inspection center, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. The center will coordinate audits of employers across states and according to the Wall Street Journal will target “at least a few fast-food chains.”
In the coming days, federal agents will notify companies that they must provide documentation including I-9 forms for all employees. In the past, the Obama Administration has targeted high-profile employers such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc., Abercrombie & Fitch Co., American Apparel Inc., and Gebbers Farms, a big apple grower in Washington state.
As the fervor for enforcement-only immigration solutions continues to increase throughout the country, one can expect that ICE workplace audits will increase and the penalties for non-compliance by employers will increase in severity as well.
