What are the Requirements of U.S. Citizenship?

Before you can apply for citizenship through naturalization, you are typically required to become a lawful permanent resident. Also often referred to as “getting a green card,” there are a number of different ways to become a permanent resident—from getting a K-1 fiancé(e) visa to adjusting status after holding a non-immigrant employment visa.

With a small exception for spousal visas, immigrants must hold a green card for five years before they can become eligible to get citizenship. Once you have satisfied this requirement, you may be eligible to enter the application process. To get your U.S. citizenship application approved, some of the things you will need to do include:

  • Provide proof that you can read and write in English;
  • Pass a basic civics and American history examination; and
  • Show evidence of positive moral character.

How Our Vail, CO Citizenship Attorneys Can Help

Unfortunately, getting a citizenship application approved can be challenging, even if you meet all of the basic eligibility requirements. Indeed, it is not uncommon for people to run into some problems (some expected, some unexpected) during the application process. The good news is that a roadblock is not the end of the road. An experienced immigration specialist can help you take action to protect your rights. Among other things, our Vail, CO citizenship lawyers will:

  • Answer any questions you have about immigration law or citizenship.
  • Help you understand and complete relevant paperwork; and

No two citizenship cases are exactly alike. Our Vail immigration lawyers only take on a limited number of cases so that we can promise our clients attentive, fully individualized legal representation.
