Who is Eligible to Apply for Citizenship in Summit County, CO?

There are a few different ways to get American citizenship. The most is “automatic citizenship.” If you are born in the United States or you are born abroad to U.S. parents, you are automatically an American citizen. For immigrants not eligible for automatic citizenship, most become U.S. citizens through the naturalization process. Generally, you need to hold a green card for five years (three years for spousal relationships) before you can apply for full citizenship. Of course, even if you are eligible to apply, citizenship is not guaranteed. You need to meet certain criteria, including:

  • Proof of ability to read/write in English;
  • A basic understanding of American history and national government;
  • Proof of a positive and upstanding moral character; and
  • A genuine commitment to our country’s founding documents.
