Denver Citizenship Lawyer

From freedom to travel around the globe to the ability to vote in state and federal elections, American citizenship comes with a wide array of different advantages. Through a legal process called naturalization, immigrants may be eligible to apply for and obtain citizenship in the United States.

At Joseph & Hall P.C., our skilled Denver citizenship lawyers are committed to helping immigrants make their American dream a reality. We help applicants with all aspects of the citizenship process. If you are considering applying for citizenship in Denver, or you have encountered any issues in the application process, our legal team is here to assist you.

Getting American Citizenship Through Naturalization: What is the Timeline?

You are not eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship immediately after receiving your green card. Under American law, you must be a lawful permanent resident for at least five consecutive years before you can submit a petition for citizenship through naturalization. Theoretically, you can apply for citizenship at any point after you become eligible to do so. Some immigrants apply almost immediately, while other people wait for years or even decades.

Qualifying for U.S. Citizenship

As noted by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), you must meet several additional eligibility requirements beyond holding a green card for five years in order to receive American citizenship. Among other things, applicants must:

  • Prove current residency in the United States;
  • Pass an English language exam that contains a reading and writing section;
  • Pass an American History and American Civics exam;
  • Commit to upholding the core values that are enshrined in the U.S. Constitution; and
  • Provide evidence demonstrates good moral character.
